Client

The James P. Wilmot Cancer Center is a new, comprehensive cancer center that provides welcoming and patient friendly treatment and clinic areas; efficient, functional research lab space, and a light-filled atrium that encourages interaction between faculty, researchers, and patients. The initial four-story structure contains Radiation Oncology, Cancer Clinics, Treatment and Infusion, Education, Administration and Faculty; Wet Bench & Clinical Research Facilities; and a USP 797 Conforming Pharmacy. A two-story structure running parallel to the ACF connects the Cancer Center to the existing Strong Memorial Hospital.

In 2012, the Wilmot's need for additional inpatient beds resulted in a feasibility study that led to the construction of three additional floors with 30 Hematology Oncology beds, 12 Bone Marrow Transplant beds, and a clinic. The 5th floor is fitted out with 28 oncology surgical beds. The three new nursing units incorporate recent developments in healthcare guidelines and evidenced based design, including decentralized nursing stations for the staff and HEPA filtered, positive pressured rooms for the immune-compromised patients.

Though LEED certification was not pursued, the building was designed to LEED standards and incorporates sustainable strategies, including the use of sustainable and recycled materials.
